Aigency vs Shopify: what Shopify's built-in AI covers, and what an agent site adds
The short answer
Aigency is not a Shopify alternative: it runs alongside a Shopify store, and a brand that adds it keeps Shopify for its catalog, checkout, and orders.
Shopify's agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores and make your products available to AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Meta, and the Shop app, with Google AI Mode and Gemini rolling out.
What agentic storefronts do not change is where the click lands: by Shopify's own count, half of AI-referred sessions land directly on a product page.
Aigency builds that landing: an agent site on your own domain that answers product, price, and fit questions, then returns the shopper to your Shopify checkout.

The short answer: Shopify and Aigency do different jobs
First, the disclosure this page owes you: it is published by Aigency. Aigency is not a Shopify alternative and never asks you to leave Shopify. It is an agentic commerce layer that runs alongside the platform you already sell on, so the useful question is not which one to pick. It is which parts of the AI shopping journey Shopify now handles for you, and which part is still yours to solve.
The journey has three moments that matter to a merchant: an AI assistant recommends your product, the shopper clicks through, and the shopper buys or leaves. Since December 2025, Shopify has built a great deal around the first moment and the third. Your products are made available to AI assistants by default, though each assistant decides what it recommends, and orders land in your admin with the channel attached. The middle moment, the page the shopper lands on, is still your regular storefront, most often the product page every visitor sees, and that is the moment Aigency builds for.
Shopify on its own
- AskA shopper asks an AI assistant for a product
- RecommendThe assistant picks from what Shopify Catalog shares
- LandYour product page, the one every visitor sees
- DecideWhat the page says, plus a chat if you run one
- BuyYour checkout, on your store or in the channel
Shopify with Aigency
- AskA shopper asks an AI assistant for a product
- RecommendThe assistant picks from what Shopify Catalog shares
- LandAn agent site on your own domain
- DecideProduct, price, and fit questions answered
- BuyYour Shopify checkout
On its own, the shopper who clicks through gets what that product page says, plus Shopify's Inbox chat if you run it. With Aigency, the same click lands on an agent site on your own domain, where product, price, and fit questions get answered in conversation before the shopper returns to the same Shopify checkout. Adding Aigency changes nothing upstream of the click: each assistant still decides what to recommend.
What Shopify's built-in AI already does
Shopify's answer to AI shopping is called agentic storefronts, launched in its Winter '26 Edition in December 2025 and expanded through 2026. Per Shopify's help center, agentic storefronts let customers discover and buy your products in AI channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta, plus Shopify's own Shop app, and the feature "is active by default for eligible stores." Google is still rolling out to eligible stores. You manage the channels under Sales channels > Agentic in your admin. The baseline requirements include the Starter plan or higher, a store that is not in private mode, and direct-to-consumer products with a title, an image, and a price. Shopify also looks at account standing, such as a track record of genuine sales and a low chargeback rate, and each channel adds requirements of its own, including agreeing to Shopify's supplemental terms for agentic storefronts.
We're making every Shopify store agent-ready by default.
Discovery: Shopify Catalog and UCP
Discovery runs through Shopify Catalog, which Shopify calls "the search infrastructure for shopping": one structured dataset of products that AI agents can search. Eligible Shopify products are in Catalog by default, and Catalog syndicates them to ChatGPT, Copilot, the Shop app, and others with no extra apps or manual feeds, though Shopify is clear that inclusion does not guarantee a product appears in any specific AI answer. Google AI Mode and Gemini get your products through the Google & YouTube sales channel or Google Merchant Center instead. Alongside Catalog sits the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard Shopify co-developed with Google for how agents and merchants interact, and per the same June 2026 post, Shopify merchants are enabled for both Catalog and UCP by default. Shopify also reports that AI searches powered by Catalog convert at twice the rate of searches using scraped data, which is a good reason to keep your listings complete.
Checkout: in the channel, or on your own store
Where the purchase happens depends on the channel. ChatGPT is a discovery channel for Shopify merchants: shoppers who buy complete checkout on your own online store, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab, so your checkout customizations and payment methods all apply. On Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta surfaces such as Muse, shoppers can pay in a Shopify-powered direct checkout without leaving the AI channel. Direct checkout is on by default for eligible stores, availability varies by channel and country, and on Google it is still rolling out. It also has documented limits: per Shopify's Copilot help page, it does not support subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products, or B2B-only products, and Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire there. Either way, orders from AI channels show up in your Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution.
Insight and control
In May 2026 agentic storefronts got their own page in the admin, with orders, sales, online store sessions, and conversion reported per AI channel, and the Spring '26 Edition in June built on it. Search intelligence shows the top AI queries in your category, which ones you rank for, and where you are not showing up yet; Shopify cautions that its ranking preview can differ from what shoppers see, since each channel re-ranks on its own logic, and calls it "a directional signal, not an exact prediction." When products surface in AI conversations without turning into sales, Sidekick suggests listing changes such as adding specifications to product titles. For accuracy, the free Shopify Knowledge Base app lets you write FAQs that AI platforms use as a trusted data source, and its query log shows the questions customers ask in AI shopping conversations and whether the AI agents could answer them. Shopify notes that the app improves the accuracy of AI answers about your store but does not change how often you appear. Every Shopify store also serves discovery files, including /agents.md and /llms.txt, that tell AI agents how the store works.
On the storefront: the Inbox agent
The same June release put Shopify's own AI in front of shoppers: an AI sales associate in Shopify Inbox that, in Shopify's words, "lives on your storefront, where it can answer buyer questions, suggest products, and handle order inquiries using the data already in your admin." Inbox runs with or without the agent, so it is your choice, and you control its tone, style, and rules, including when to loop a human into the conversation. It is a chat assistant for every visitor to your existing pages, including customers asking where their order is. It is also the closest thing Shopify ships to what Aigency does, so the difference is spelled out below.
That is a lot of ground. The channel plumbing is on by default, while the Knowledge Base app and the Inbox agent are yours to turn on. Nothing on this page argues for switching any of it off.
Shopify and Aigency, job by job
| The job | Shopify, built in | Aigency |
|---|---|---|
| Getting your products into AI answers | Agentic storefronts make your products available in ChatGPT, Copilot, Meta, and the Shop app, with Google AI Mode and Gemini rolling out. On by default for eligible stores; each assistant decides what to recommend. | Not its job. It works with the visibility you already have, and the free scan shows where ChatGPT sends your shoppers today. |
| Checkout | Your online store checkout for ChatGPT, or a Shopify-powered direct checkout inside Copilot, Google, and Meta, where available | Returns the shopper to your Shopify checkout. Checkout never moves. |
| Where an AI-referred shopper lands | Your existing storefront pages. Half of AI-referred sessions start on a product page | An agent site on your own subdomain (ai.yourbrand.com), built for the shoppers AI assistants send |
| Answering questions after the click | The optional Inbox agent answers buyer questions in a chat on your storefront | The whole page is the conversation: product, price, and fit, continuing what the AI assistant started |
| Rules for what the AI says | Knowledge Base FAQs that AI platforms treat as a trusted source, plus tone, rules, and human handoff for the Inbox agent | A Policy and Control Agent: what the agent site may recommend, what it must never say, and where it routes shoppers |
| What you learn | Orders, sessions, and conversion per AI channel, the AI queries you rank for, and a Knowledge Base query log of questions from AI shopping conversations | Every question shoppers ask the agent site after the click, as demand data |
| Platform | Shopify stores, or Shopify's Agentic plan for brands that sell elsewhere | Any platform, Shopify included: it reads your storefront from the outside |
| Setup | Active by default for eligible stores, managed under Sales channels > Agentic | A sales conversation, then days: each agent site is built per brand, runs off-site in parallel, and goes live when you point AI-referred traffic at it |
Read the table by row and three rows overlap: conversations, rules, and insight. The Inbox agent and the agent site both hold conversations and both follow rules you set, and Shopify's reports and the free Aigency scan both look at how AI assistants treat your store. Even there the questions differ. Shopify's ranking view previews how your products fare in Catalog search; the scan runs shopping prompts through ChatGPT itself and shows where it sends shoppers and whether the page it sends them to can answer what they asked. The Knowledge Base query log shows the questions AI agents field about your store; the agent site shows what shoppers still asked after they clicked through. And the Inbox agent is a chat window for every visitor on your existing pages, while the agent site is a separate destination, built for the one visitor who arrives mid-conversation from an AI assistant.
What Shopify leaves to you: the page after the click
Shopify's own numbers show where the weight falls. On its second-quarter 2026 earnings call, Shopify said AI-driven traffic and orders to its merchants' stores had tripled year over year, while noting that the volume is "still small relative to our massive GMV", and its president described where those shoppers go:
Buyers' shopping journeys are being compressed as half of all AI-referred sessions are landing directly on a product description page. That is 2.5 times more than what we see with traditional search.
A compressed journey is good news, and it puts a lot of weight on one page. The shopper who lands on that product page arrived mid-conversation. If a question is still open (will this fit, how does it compare, does it work with what I already own), the page can only answer it if its author anticipated it. AI-referred shoppers are worth that effort: Adobe measured them converting 54% better than other traffic to US retail sites in May 2026. When the page lacks the answer and no chat is running, the easiest next step is back to the assistant.
Shopify's tools for that moment improve the page itself. Sidekick's listing suggestions and SimGym, which offers ideas from AI-simulated shoppers on ways to improve your store, help the page answer more, and the Inbox agent adds a chat window to it. Aigency changes where the click lands. The shopper an AI assistant sends arrives at an agent site on your own subdomain (ai.yourbrand.com), built to continue the conversation the assistant started: it answers product, price, and fit questions in plain language, with a working path to buy. Vision crawling agents build it from your live storefront, a Monitoring Agent keeps it in step as products, prices, and policies change, and a Policy and Control Agent enforces what it may recommend, what it must never say, and where it routes shoppers.
The agent site also produces a record of what shoppers asked after the click. Every question it answers is demand data, and it complements Shopify's own signals: Search intelligence shows the AI queries you rank for, the Knowledge Base query log shows what AI agents asked about your store, and the agent site shows the questions shoppers still had once they arrived from an AI assistant.
When Shopify's built-in AI is enough
An honest comparison names its own losing conditions. For plenty of Shopify brands, the built-in tools are the whole answer for now:
- AI assistants are not sending you much traffic yet. Keep agentic storefronts on, use Search intelligence to find the queries you miss, and fix your listings first. Aigency converts AI-referred shoppers; it does not create them. GEO vs SEO covers the visibility work.
- Your product pages already answer what shoppers ask. If you sell replenishment or single-spec products where the page says everything a buyer needs, a conversational landing adds little.
- Your AI sales happen inside the channel. If most AI-driven orders complete in direct checkout on Copilot, Google, or Meta, fewer shoppers ever reach your pages, and the landing matters less.
- You want one assistant for every visitor. For support questions and order status across your whole store, the Inbox agent is built for the job and reads your admin data directly.
The fit for Aigency is a Shopify brand whose AI referrals are growing, whose products take a conversation to buy (fit, sizing, compatibility, comparison), and whose analytics show those visitors landing on product pages and leaving. For that brand, Shopify already handles the plumbing that gets products to AI assistants, and the landing is where the value leaks. The wider decision, including approaches other than ours, is laid out in Aigency vs the alternatives.
How to run Shopify's AI and Aigency together
The two touch different parts of the journey, so running both is mostly a matter of order:
- Confirm your channels. In Sales channels > Agentic, check which AI channels are active and whether direct checkout is on for Copilot, Google, and Meta.
- Complete your store policies. Shopify's AI channels require terms of service, privacy, and refund policies in your settings, and the Knowledge Base app improves the accuracy of AI answers to policy questions.
- Let the crawlers in. Catalog is not the only way assistants read your store: the ChatGPT shopping user agents lists the bots that should reach your pages.
- Measure AI referrals on their own. Sales channels > Agentic reports orders, online store sessions, and conversion per AI channel, though not yet for headless stores. For bounces and page-level behavior, build the analytics segment in how to convert AI traffic.
- Run the free scan. It shows where ChatGPT sends your shoppers and whether the page it sends them to can answer what they asked.
- Point AI-referred traffic at the agent site. Every agent site is built per brand, so how the routing works for your store, and how those visits show up in your Shopify reports, is settled with our team during setup. Checkout and orders stay in Shopify.
Selling on BigCommerce instead, or weighing it? The same comparison for that platform is in Aigency vs BigCommerce.
Frequently asked questions
Is Aigency a Shopify alternative?
No. Aigency does not replace any part of Shopify: your catalog, checkout, orders, theme, and apps stay exactly where they are. Aigency hosts a parallel, agentic version of your store on your own subdomain (ai.yourbrand.com) that receives the shoppers AI assistants send you, answers their product, price, and fit questions, and hands them back to your Shopify checkout to pay.
Does Shopify already put my products in ChatGPT?
Yes, if your store is eligible. Shopify's agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores and make your products available to ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, with no extra apps or manual feeds. To sell on ChatGPT, your store must sell to customers in the United States, have its store policies completed, and agree to Shopify's supplemental terms for agentic storefronts. Being in Catalog does not guarantee ChatGPT recommends a given product, and ChatGPT is a discovery channel for Shopify merchants: shoppers who buy complete checkout on your own online store.
Do I need Aigency if I have Shopify's agentic storefronts?
It depends on where you lose shoppers. Agentic storefronts make your products available to AI assistants and keep checkout in Shopify. They do not change where the click lands, which Shopify says is a product page for half of AI-referred sessions. If AI referrals are growing and bouncing off pages that cannot answer the question the shopper arrived with, that landing is what Aigency builds. If AI assistants rarely send you traffic yet, Shopify's built-in tools are the right place to start.
What is the difference between Shopify's Inbox agent and an Aigency agent site?
Both hold conversations with shoppers, and both follow rules you set. The Inbox agent is an AI sales associate in a chat on your existing Shopify storefront, answering buyer questions, suggesting products, and handling order inquiries for every visitor, with a human handoff you control. An Aigency agent site is a separate destination on your own subdomain, built for the shoppers AI assistants send: the whole page is the conversation, and every question it answers becomes demand data. Some brands will want both.
Does Aigency need a Shopify app or access to my admin?
No app installation is needed. Aigency reads your rendered Shopify storefront from the outside, the way a shopper's browser sees it, and runs in parallel on a subdomain you own. There is no migration, no re-platform, and no big engineering lift: you point your AI-referred traffic at the agent site and it is live, and a Monitoring Agent keeps it in step as products, prices, and policies change on your store.
Where does checkout happen when Aigency runs alongside Shopify?
On your Shopify checkout, exactly as it does today. The agent site answers the shopper's questions and then sends them to your store to pay, so your payment methods, discounts, and checkout customizations apply as usual, and the order lands in your Shopify admin like any other.
